Estimating distances in the sky

Estimating distances in the sky

Hi! In this post I will be going through simple hand measurements that will help you to find your way around the night sky.

Some people like this way because they find it difficult using charts that are not to scale.

The best method is to use your hand and hold it out at arms length. A finger is just over 1 degree, which is twice the size of a full moon.

A clenched fist is around 10 degrees and the width of the outstretched fingers is 22.

The plough is 25 degrees across and the bowl is roughly 10. Another constellation to look out for, Orion, is 20 degrees wide (2 clenched fists).

Thank you for reading this post,

Bye
