The winter solstice!!

 The winter solstice!

As you may know, today is the winter solstice, the day that marks the shortest hours of daylight and the longest hours of night, in the north of the equator.

But how does that even work?

Well, the winter solstice marks the 'shortest day' as well as the beginning of winter. This happens when the earth tilts away from the sun.

In other words, at summer, the north of the equator tilts 23.5 degrees away from the sun, giving us more daylights hours. Whereas, in the winter, we tilt 23.5 degrees further away from the sun, giving us less hours of light. Today, the 21st December, is the day that we are furthest on our tilt. After today, we will begin to tilt closer and closer to the sun, until the summer solstice ( 21st June).

This picture shows the earth tilting on it's axis, further from the sun, in the winter, making our days shorter.

This picture shows the earth tilting nearer to the sun in summer, giving us longer days.

Thankyou for reading, and have a great Christmas!🎄🎄🎅🎅
